Moving from Zbrush to 3D coat.

Moving from Zbrush to 3D coat.

Postby irrational » Wed Jun 09, 2010 10:14 am

Ive downloaded 3D Coat a few times but never really got going before my trail died. I just got the latest (3.3) trial and I'm determined to put some time into it. As a Zbrush user does anyone here have any parallels that can be drawn between the 2 as far as use?
In other words; What that I learned in ZB can be directly applied to 3DC?

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter, the main guys to ask here at the moment on Liberty3d are Leigh Bamforth who works often in both applications as well as Adam Gibson.

For me, someone who has spent some time in zBrush before buying 3DCoat (because it was cheaper and more LightWave 3D friendly) I am finding that while its a bit more steep to get into for learning curve - because I am a LightWave guy, I actually feel more at home with it than I ever felt when I was working in zBrush.

You may want to PM either of them or check out some of Leigh's training thats coming up here soon as well as Adam's.

No problem. I think you may also be excited to see some combo videos from Lino Grandi and Leigh Bamforth shortly.
I heard a "rumor" they were working on something... I cannot confirm or deny what it is just yet :)

Kat, other 3D coat users, considering new Zbrush 4 arrival, why should i choose 3D Coat over Zbrush?

Because it will be my first sculpting application, money is not the big problem but time investment is... Which one you should go as your primary sculpting application.

---and i m waiting for 3D coat videos...

Hi Tyrot.
I used to work in Zbrush and it was ok yet it was always a problem for me to dig through menus to export texture and sort out exporting with UVs and all that. I never really got that into it so that's my fault but it didn't seem as intuitive as I had hoped when I first started using it. My preference now, because its more intuitive is 3D-Coat. It may have its irks but I haven't run into them for the most part because I primarily use it for texture painting only which is what I wanted in the first place from a program like zbrush and 3D-Coat. I find that texture painting in 3D-Coat to be much more LightWave user friendly and getting objects in and out for use with LW much easier as well than zBrush at least for the moment. Price is also cheaper as well which was a major factor for me at the time and still today because I need a program I can work with to do what I need to do and learn and use those areas specifically without blowing my brains out learning a whole other area for a single function that I need in the process - but don't use anything else from that area. That's why I like LightWave so much because it allows me to do what I want to do and I can ignore the rest. 3D-Coat for me is very similar.

How has zBrush 4.0 impacted your decision to move to 3Dcoat?

I use both packages ...Zbrush and 3D Coat.....I find they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Zbrush is definitely a deeper package and a little harder to learn. 3D Coat is much quicker to learn and can do a great job with most things.

3D Coats Retopology tools are much faster and more user friendly than ZBrush's.

But where ZBrush packs it's best punch is that you can get more detail in HD Sculpting. So if you are making a character where you need to zoom in on the surface very close I would say to use Zbrush on that aspect of your project.

But at this point in time I wouldn't want to trade one for the other as they can be used seamlessly in a pipleline together utilizing their different strengths...

So ya....I recommend both pieces of software :)
