Cockpits

In Babylon 5, the people inside the cockpits of the starfurys were comped in. How would one do that? Would it just be easier to make one in CG?

At least in the DVD they put out a few years back they had a cockpit set that the actors were in and then they had computer controlled lights to light the set...if memory serves that's how they did the cockpit scenes themselves. Green screen and an actor in a set.

I'd imagine for distant or quick flyby shots the pilots are CG, only in close up shots where the actors need to be clearly seen are live action footage comped in.

Maybe I could have glass that's tinted to block any nearby stars...
