LW 9.6.1 Released

Lightwave 9.6.1 was released from beta program and can now be downloaded by all LW9 license holders and will use your standard LW9 License code.   The biggest difference between 9.6 and 9.6.1 is that there is a 64-bit version available for the Mac.   The announcement was made in an existing thread in the open beta section of Newtek’s forums on June 8, 2011. The build number on the release version is 1555.

LWCAD 3.6 Volumes 1, 2, & 3

Adam Gibson has released volumes 1-3 of his training videos covering the tools of the excellent (some say indispensable) LWCAD modeling plug-in.

Lightwave on Linux with WINE!

Like Lightwave but don’t like Windows or Mac OS? Oleeblood Animation has posted instructions and a custom build of Wine (software that runs Windows apps without Windows) that lets you run Layout and Modeler on Linux. Unfortunately, the dongle driver is only 32-bit, so you can only run the 64bit version of Lightwave in trial/demo mode. Update: 64bit is now working. The announcement. | The download page.

Lego Blade Runner – A Short CG Film

I found a fun short film that combines Lego and Blade Runner. This would feel fresher if there weren’t all those Lego video games (Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones) out there. Still, this is a well executed personal project, and it doesn’t take long to watch, so check it out. This short was made in Lightwave (and After Effects, and Premiere Pro) by VFX artist Leo Tierney. Check out his reel and other work at his website: http://www.lightsage.net

Digital Bullet Hits: Bullet Holes in a Metal Door Part Two

Part Two of the Bullet Holes in a Metal Door tutorial is now available. This set of videos and project files picks up where part one left off by adding sparks and smoke (particle emitters), the interior of the hangar (very simple modeling), and making a couple of variations on the project.

Time-Lapse Modeling: Samsung Cell Phone

Rodrigo Caetano is posting time-lapse videos of a Lightwave modeling, rendering and compositing project on Vimeo. Watching other people model, even without narration, can be beneficial to beginners and pros as well. These videos (so far) show setting up reference images and doing a lot of sub-division modeling.

Getting Started with DP_Instance Mini-Tutorial

Pumpkins Instanced by DP_Instance

DWBurman has put together a mini-tutorial that shows how to get started with Denis Pontonnier’s DP_Instance plugin. DP_Instance is a powerful new volumetric plugin for cloning geometry at render time. Watch it at YouTube or Vimeo

LightNet: Cloud – Onsite/Offsite Render Controller

LightNet: Cloud

Joe Justice has announced his new render controller is available for public beta.

LightNet: Cloud takes a totally different approach to rendering. It uses a FTP server to store scene data and output frames. Render nodes can be on the onsite network or offsite connecting via the internet. The settings are simple and there is a diagnostics tool to help setup. Scenes are sent to the sever via a Watch Folder. All you have to do is drop a scene in the folder and everything happens automagically.
